China Warns Mexico Over Proposed 50% Tariff on Asian Cars
China has warned Mexico against its proposed tariff hike on Asia-made vehicles, particularly Chinese cars, from 20% to 50%. “We hope Mexico will be extremely cautious, and think twice before acting,” the Ministry of Commerce said, emphasizing that “China and Mexico are mutually important trade partners” and expressing concern over potential harm to bilateral economic ties. Mexico’s Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard confirmed the plan, which is part of a broader budget proposal affecting $52 billion in imports and still requires Congressional approval. China vowed to “take necessary measures” to protect its interests and criticized the “U.S. abuse of tariffs,” urging countries to uphold free trade and avoid harming third-party interests.
