India to Name 100 High-Import Goods for Local Manufacturing Push
India’s Commerce Ministry will soon publish a list of 100 high-import products—including chemicals and plastics—to spur domestic manufacturing, the Economic Times reported. The move follows reciprocal U.S. tariffs on Indian goods and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swadeshi push, a long-standing campaign to promote indigenous production and reduce reliance on foreign goods. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said the list aims to reduce import dependence by enhancing capacity and optimizing existing facilities. “Our endeavour is to identify these products and put them in the public domain so manufacturers can explore opportunities,” he said, adding the list will be released by month-end or October.
