Malaysia Retail Sales Climb 5.4% in June

Retail sales in Malaysia climbed by 5.4% year-on-year in June 2025, accelerating from a 4.9% increase in the previous month. This marked the steepest growth in three months, driven by stronger increases in sales at non-specialised stores (5.7% vs 4% in May), food, beverages, and tobacco (6.5% vs 6.4%), and automotive fuel (6% vs 5.7%). Retail trade also grew faster for other goods in specialised stores (5.9% vs 5.2%) and for trade not in stores, stalls, or markets (5.4% vs 4.1%). Conversely, sales eased for information and communication equipment (4.1% vs 5.3%) and household equipment (3.8% vs 5.6%). On a monthly basis, retail sales rose by 0.7%, picking up from a 0.5% gain in May. Meanwhile, wholesale trade growth accelerated to 5.2%, up from 4.7% in the previous month, while vehicle trade rose at a softer pace of 0.7% compared to 1.5% in May.
