Sweden Posts Smallest Trade Surplus in 5 Months

Sweden’s trade surplus narrowed to SEK 3.9 billion in May 2025 from SEK 10.6 billion in the same month of the previous year. This marked the smallest figure since December last year, as exports fell by 9.6% from a year earlier to SEK 169.6 billion, with sales to the EU and non-EU countries shrinking by 5.1% and 14.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, imports dropped by 6.4% to SEK 165.7 billion, weighed down by purchases from the EU (-3.1%) and non-EU countries (-12.8%). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the trade surplus widened to SEK 8.2 billion from SEK 7.8 billion in the previous month. Considering the first five months of the year, the country’s trade surplus widened to SEK 48.1 billion, compared to SEK 47.7 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year.
