U.S. to Reveal Japan’s USD 550 Billion Investment Deal: Lutnick

The U.S. is set to announce a USD 550 billion Japanese investment package this week, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Monday. The funds may support U.S. manufacturing in semiconductors, antibiotics, and rare earths. The deal, agreed in July, includes a reduced 15% tariff on Japanese imports in exchange for investment via government-backed loans and guarantees. While Trump called it “our money to invest, as we like,” Japanese officials emphasized mutual benefit. Tokyo prefers a non-binding arrangement, resisting Washington’s push for a written agreement. Confusion over tariff rates lingered until Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified exemptions and amendments to prior orders. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Japan avoided a formal pact to expedite tariff relief, especially for auto exports.
