Cocoa futures edged higher in the latest session, with New York and London contracts advancing despite rising exchange inventories and increased cocoa exports from Nigeria. The market continues to balance near-term evidence of improving availability against growing concerns about the next West African harvest, where adverse weather, disease and weak pod development could constrain production.
December 2026 New York cocoa futures gained 10 points, or 0.18%, while December London cocoa rose 17 points, or 0.41%. However, ICE cocoa inventories climbed to 3,675,109 bags, their highest level in two and a half years, highlighting the availability of supplies within the exchange warehouse system.
The supply outlook remains divided. Ivory Coast shipments at the start of the current marketing season have fallen sharply compared with last year, while Nigeria’s September exports increased by 33%. Meanwhile, early crop assessments in Ivory Coast and Ghana point to potentially lower production in 2026/27, with El Niño conditions adding another source of uncertainty.

Current Price Action: Cocoa Futures Advance Despite Rising Inventories
Cocoa futures moved modestly higher, with December 2026 New York cocoa gaining 10 points to finish 0.18% higher and December London cocoa advancing 17 points, or 0.41%.
The gains came despite a continued increase in ICE cocoa inventories, which reached 3,675,109 bags. The accumulation of exchange stocks to a two-and-a-half-year high represents a significant near-term counterweight to the bullish argument based on potential future crop shortages.
Rising inventories can ease concerns about immediately available supplies and reduce pressure on buyers to secure cocoa at higher prices. However, exchange stocks alone do not provide a complete picture of the global supply balance, particularly when future crop production remains uncertain.
The market’s latest advance suggests that traders continue to consider the possibility of tighter supplies in the next marketing season. Whether that support persists will depend on fresh evidence from West African shipments, crop development and demand.
ICE Cocoa Inventories Reach a 2.5-Year High
ICE cocoa inventories have increased steadily since the beginning of the year, reaching 3,675,109 bags in the latest reported update.
The increase is a bearish consideration because larger exchange inventories indicate greater availability of cocoa held within the certified warehouse system. If stocks continue to build, traders may become less concerned about immediate supply tightness.
However, the inventory increase needs to be considered alongside the outlook for the next harvest. If production in Ivory Coast and Ghana falls materially in 2026/27, current inventories may provide only a temporary buffer against future shortages.
The market will therefore be watching whether stocks continue to rise or begin to stabilise as new shipment and production data emerge.
Ivory Coast Cocoa Deliveries Fall 41% at the Start of the Season
Cocoa deliveries to ports in Ivory Coast fell sharply at the beginning of the current marketing season. Government data showed that farmers delivered 78,212 metric tonnes between October 1 and October 18, down 41% from 133,209 tonnes over the comparable period last year.
The decline provides a bullish signal because Ivory Coast is the world’s largest cocoa producer and a major source of global export supply.
Lower deliveries may reflect changes in harvest timing, crop availability or logistical conditions. The short reporting period does not, by itself, establish that full-season production will fall by the same proportion.
Nevertheless, if reduced arrivals persist over subsequent weeks, concerns about export availability could strengthen and provide additional support to cocoa prices.
The market will be watching whether port deliveries recover as the main harvest progresses or continue to trail last year’s pace.
Nigeria Cocoa Exports Rise as Higher Prices Encourage Selling
Nigeria’s cocoa-bean exports increased 33% year over year in September to 19,343 tonnes, according to the supplied data.
The increase provides a bearish counterpoint to the decline in Ivory Coast deliveries. Higher cocoa prices have reportedly encouraged Nigerian exporters to sell, increasing the amount of cocoa entering international markets.
The Nigerian export figures demonstrate that supply developments are not uniform across West Africa. While reduced Ivory Coast arrivals are raising concerns, stronger Nigerian exports are providing additional market availability.
The overall price effect will depend on whether higher exports from Nigeria and other origins can offset reduced shipments from Ivory Coast and any deterioration in the next crop outlook.
Cocoa Demand: Asia and Europe Strengthen While North America Weakens
Recent quarterly cocoa-grinding figures show a divided demand picture across major consuming regions.
North American Q3 cocoa grindings fell 2.5% year over year to 109,978 tonnes, disappointing expectations for no change. The decline indicates weaker processing activity than the market had anticipated and raises questions about demand in the region.
In contrast, the Cocoa Association of Asia reported that Q3 grindings increased 29% year over year to 233,767 tonnes, a record according to the supplied report. The result significantly exceeded expectations for 15% growth.
European cocoa grindings also surprised to the upside, rising 3.2% to 348,215 tonnes when a 3.9% year-over-year decline had been expected.
The divergent results suggest that cocoa demand cannot be assessed through a single regional indicator. North American weakness is a bearish consideration, while stronger Asian and European processing activity provides a more constructive signal.
Traders will be watching subsequent grinding reports to determine whether the stronger Asian and European figures persist and whether North American demand stabilises.
El Niño Weather Risks Threaten Future Cocoa Production
The potential development of a particularly strong El Niño weather pattern is an important medium-term concern for cocoa production.
The US Climate Prediction Center has indicated that the El Niño pattern emerging across the equatorial Pacific could become one of the strongest in more than 75 years, according to the supplied information.
El Niño can bring warmer and drier conditions to parts of West Africa, potentially reducing soil moisture, stressing cocoa trees and lowering yields. The impact will depend on the actual weather conditions experienced in growing regions and the timing of rainfall relative to crop development.
The possibility of adverse conditions is particularly important because Ivory Coast and Ghana account for a substantial share of global cocoa production. If weather stress coincides with disease pressure and weak pod development, the resulting crop losses could tighten the global balance.
However, the projected weather pattern should be treated as a risk rather than a confirmed production outcome. Subsequent rainfall data and field assessments will be essential for determining its actual effect.
Ivory Coast Crop Outlook: Poor Pod Development Raises Concerns
Early surveys of the 2026/27 Ivory Coast cocoa crop indicate below-average cherelle formation, referring to the early development of cocoa pods.
The supplied assessments point to poor pod development and an average production estimate of 1.8 million tonnes for the season beginning in September, down 18% from approximately 2.2 million tonnes in 2025/26.
The outlook is a potential source of support for cocoa prices because Ivory Coast is the world’s largest producer. A decline of this scale, if confirmed, could reduce global export availability.
Cloudy weather and limited sunshine in Ivory Coast and Ghana have also reportedly contributed to conditions favourable to black pod disease, which can reduce both cocoa bean quality and crop output.
The early estimates remain subject to change as the season progresses. Traders will need to monitor subsequent crop surveys, rainfall and disease reports to establish whether the projected decline is confirmed.
Ghana Cocoa Production: Estimates Point to Further Weakness
Ghana’s cocoa outlook is also a source of concern. On August 20, Ghana’s Cocoa Board indicated that a field survey of pod counts pointed to 2026/27 production of 650,000 tonnes, down 13% from 750,000 tonnes in 2025/26.
A separate outlook from Ghana’s cocoa regulator, COCOBOD, was more bearish. On July 30, it projected that production could fall to between 450,000 and 550,000 tonnes in 2026/27, compared with a projected 750,000 tonnes for 2025/26.
The lower outlook reflects the combined effects of swollen shoot disease, ageing cocoa farms and the possibility of adverse El Niño weather.
These estimates represent different assessments and should not be treated as a single confirmed production forecast. However, both indicate concern about Ghana’s ability to maintain output at the levels projected for the preceding season.
The current marketing year’s production has been stronger. Ghana’s cocoa board reported on August 26 that 750,000 tonnes had been harvested for 2025/26, up 25.6% from 597,000 tonnes in 2024/25.
This contrast between stronger current-season production and a potentially weaker next crop is central to the market outlook. Existing supplies may remain available in the near term, while future production risks could provide support further along the horizon.
Ivory Coast Production and Shipments: Conflicting Signals
The Ivory Coast supply picture remains mixed because recent delivery figures point to a sharp slowdown, while historical production and shipment data indicate that supplies have been abundant.
Bloomberg reported that cumulative shipments to ports reached 2.18 million tonnes during the international cocoa marketing year from October 1, 2025, through September 27, 2026. This was 19.8% above the year-earlier period.
The figures use the international marketing-year convention, even though Ivory Coast moved its 2026/27 marketing-year start forward by one month to September 1. The different reporting periods are important when comparing cumulative shipments.
Separately, the Ivory Coast cocoa regulator, Le Conseil du Café-Cacao, reported that the country harvested 2.06 million tonnes from June 2025 to June 2026, up 30% from 1.58 million tonnes a year earlier.
The historical data support the argument that the market entered the current period with substantial supplies. However, they do not negate the more recent decline in deliveries or the potential for lower output in the next crop.
The key question is whether the latest fall in arrivals signals a sustained tightening or a temporary change in the pace of deliveries. Further shipment data will help distinguish between these possibilities.
Bullish Sentiment: Factors That Could Support Cocoa Prices
- Lower Ivory Coast deliveries: Port arrivals fell 41% year over year during October 1–18, indicating weaker initial flows from the world’s largest cocoa producer.
- Potentially smaller West African crops: Early assessments point to lower 2026/27 output in Ivory Coast and Ghana, although the forecasts remain uncertain.
- El Niño weather risks: Warmer, drier conditions in West Africa could reduce soil moisture, stress cocoa trees and constrain yields.
- Disease and poor pod development: Black pod disease and below-average cherelle formation could reduce crop quality and production.
- Stronger Asian and European grindings: Q3 processing activity rose 29% in Asia and 3.2% in Europe, exceeding the expectations cited in the supplied report.
- Potentially lower Ghanaian production: COCOBOD’s outlook for 450,000–550,000 tonnes highlights the risk of a significant decline if disease and adverse weather worsen.
Bearish Sentiment: Factors That Could Drive Further Losses
- Rising ICE inventories: Stocks have reached 3,675,109 bags, the highest level in two and a half years.
- Higher Nigerian exports: September cocoa-bean exports rose 33% year over year to 19,343 tonnes, adding to available international supply.
- Weaker North American grindings: Q3 processing fell 2.5% year over year, signalling weaker demand in a major consuming region.
- Strong historical Ivory Coast output: The regulator reported a 30% increase in harvested production during June 2025–June 2026.
- Higher cumulative Ivory Coast shipments: Shipments reached 2.18 million tonnes through September 27, up 19.8% year over year under the international marketing-year measure.
- Uncertainty surrounding future crop forecasts: Early production estimates and weather projections may change as the season develops, meaning anticipated supply losses are not yet confirmed.
Cocoa Price Forecast: What Traders Are Watching
Cocoa prices are balancing near-term inventory growth and evidence of substantial past supply against concerns about the next West African harvest.
Bullish scenario: Futures could strengthen if Ivory Coast deliveries remain well below last year’s pace, early crop assessments continue to deteriorate and El Niño produces adverse weather across major growing regions. Further evidence of disease pressure or lower Ghanaian production would reinforce the supply-risk premium.
Bearish scenario: Prices could come under pressure if ICE inventories continue to rise, Nigerian exports remain strong and historical supply availability offsets the decline in current Ivory Coast deliveries. Continued weakness in North American grindings could also limit demand-side support, particularly if Asian and European processing growth moderates.
The supplied data do not establish confirmed technical support or resistance levels. Traders should monitor recent contract highs and lows alongside ICE inventory changes, West African port arrivals, grinding reports and updated crop estimates.
Supply Outlook
The cocoa supply outlook remains divided between rising near-term inventories and concerns about the 2026/27 harvest.
ICE inventories at a two-and-a-half-year high and strong historical Ivory Coast production suggest that supplies have been relatively comfortable. However, the sharp decline in recent port deliveries and the possibility of lower output in Ivory Coast and Ghana point to potential tightening later in the season.
El Niño, disease pressure and weak pod development represent additional risks, but their effects will depend on actual crop conditions. Subsequent harvest assessments and shipment data will be essential in determining whether the projected production declines materialise.
Demand Outlook
Demand indicators are mixed across the major consuming regions. North American grindings declined 2.5% year over year, while Asian grindings rose 29% and European grindings increased 3.2%.
The stronger Asian and European results provide evidence of resilience in those markets, but the North American decline highlights the uneven nature of processing demand.
Future grinding reports will help establish whether the recent regional differences persist. If demand remains strong in Asia and Europe while West African output weakens, the global balance could tighten. If processing growth slows and inventories continue to accumulate, the market may face greater difficulty sustaining higher prices.
Market Outlook for the Coming Sessions
Cocoa futures enter the coming sessions with a cautiously constructive medium-term outlook, although near-term supply indicators remain mixed.
Rising ICE inventories, higher Nigerian exports and strong historical Ivory Coast output are bearish considerations. Against these factors, the sharp fall in recent Ivory Coast deliveries, weak early crop assessments in West Africa and potential El Niño-related weather disruption provide support.
The next directional move will depend on whether current shipments recover, whether inventories continue to accumulate and whether the projected production risks become more evident in crop data.
For now, traders should distinguish between the availability of existing supplies and the outlook for the next harvest. A market with comfortable inventories today can still become tighter if future production declines materially, but that transition requires confirmation from actual production and demand figures.
Today Markets Analysis
Cocoa is trading against two competing narratives: rising exchange inventories and strong historical West African production on one side, and the risk of a weaker 2026/27 crop on the other.
The latest gains in New York and London futures suggest that traders continue to price in some concern about future supply, despite the record-high ICE inventory level. Reduced Ivory Coast deliveries and potential weather-related crop losses remain key bullish considerations, while Nigeria’s stronger exports and mixed grinding data limit the strength of the near-term bullish case.
The outlook remains highly sensitive to West African harvest developments, El Niño forecasts, inventory changes and regional processing data. Confirmation of a smaller crop could support prices, while continued stock accumulation and comfortable physical availability could cap gains.
