US cattle markets are showing diverging price action, with live cattle futures under pressure while feeder cattle contracts advance on stronger auction prices and continued support from wholesale beef values. The latest session highlights a market balancing softer live cattle futures against firm demand for feeder animals and elevated boxed beef prices.

Live cattle contracts declined by 35 to 77 cents, although the October contract edged slightly higher. Feeder cattle futures moved in the opposite direction, gaining between 7 cents and $2.90, supported by stronger prices at the Oklahoma City feeder cattle auction and a rising CME Feeder Cattle Index.

Wholesale beef prices also strengthened, with both Choice and Select boxed beef values moving higher. Meanwhile, cattle slaughter remains above the comparable period last year, adding an important supply consideration as traders assess feedlot inventories, cash negotiations and consumer demand.

Market Snapshot

Futures prices and wholesale beef values are presented as reported in the supplied market update. The quoted futures contracts have different maturities and should not be compared as identical instruments.

Current Live Cattle Price Action

Live cattle futures finished lower across most contracts, with December declining 35 cents to $230.850 and February 2027 falling 77.5 cents to $233.575. The nearby October contract was marginally higher at $230.000.

The mixed performance suggests that traders are assessing the balance between firm wholesale beef prices and uncertainty surrounding cash cattle negotiations. Cash trade has been quiet early in the week as feedlots compile showlists, leaving the next round of negotiated sales as an important catalyst.

Last week’s cash market provides a reference point, with northern sales reported at $228 and some southern transactions reaching $230. The direction of the next cash trade will help determine whether futures weakness reflects short-term positioning or a more sustained shift in expectations.

The strength in feeder cattle is an important counterpoint. Higher feeder prices indicate continued competition for animals entering feedlots, even as live cattle futures face selling pressure.

Feeder Cattle Demand and Auction Prices

Feeder cattle futures recorded a stronger session, with October 2026 gaining $2.90 to $352.800. November rose $1.475 to $350.025, while January 2027 advanced $1.10 to $347.100.

The CME Feeder Cattle Index increased by $2.12 to $350.67 on October 23, reinforcing the strength in reported feeder cattle values.

The Oklahoma City feeder cattle auction also showed notable gains. Sales covering 5,506 head were reported, with steer prices generally $5–$15 higher and lighter-weight steers gaining $20–$30.

These increases point to strong competition for available feeder cattle, particularly lighter animals that offer buyers flexibility in managing feeding periods and future marketing decisions. However, higher feeder prices also raise input costs for feedlots, making the relationship between purchase prices, feed expenses and expected finished-cattle values increasingly important.

If feeder prices continue to rise faster than expected finished-cattle returns, feedlot margins could come under pressure even while the feeder market remains firm.

Wholesale Beef Prices and Demand

Wholesale boxed beef prices strengthened in the Tuesday afternoon report, offering support to the broader cattle complex.

Choice boxed beef increased by $2.78 to $372.22, while Select rose $1.29 to $358.85. The reported Choice-Select spread was $13.37, indicating a premium for Choice-grade beef.

Higher boxed beef prices can improve packer revenue per head, depending on processing costs, carcass weights and the prices paid for live cattle. They may also reflect changing product availability or demand for higher-quality cuts.

The key question for the coming sessions is whether wholesale strength translates into sustained buying interest in the cash cattle market. If boxed beef values remain firm and packers compete for cattle, live cattle prices could find support. If beef prices retreat or consumer demand weakens, the market may struggle to sustain higher finished-cattle values.

Cattle Slaughter and Supply Outlook

USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter at 110,000 head for Tuesday, bringing the week’s reported total to 216,000 head.

The weekly total was approximately 1,000 head below the comparable previous-week figure but 7,780 head above the same week last year.

The year-over-year increase indicates that more cattle are moving through processing than during the comparable period last year. Greater slaughter can support beef availability, although the price effect depends on carcass weights, beef demand, processing capacity and the availability of market-ready animals.

The next reports should help traders assess whether slaughter continues to run above year-ago levels and whether the additional production can be absorbed without putting significant pressure on wholesale prices.

Cash cattle trade will also be important. A stronger negotiated market could reinforce the recent wholesale beef gains, while weaker cash prices could add pressure to live cattle futures.

Bullish Sentiment

1. Rising feeder cattle values: Gains across feeder cattle futures and the CME Feeder Cattle Index indicate continued strength in the feeder market.
2. Stronger auction prices: Oklahoma City auction results show firm competition for steers, particularly lighter-weight animals.
3. Higher boxed beef prices: Choice and Select values both increased, supporting the potential for stronger packer revenue.
4. Potential cash market support: If the next round of cash cattle sales holds at or above last week’s levels, live cattle futures could regain momentum.
5. Strong nearby feeder contracts: The October feeder contract’s $2.90 advance demonstrates substantial buying interest in the reported session.

Bearish Sentiment

1. Declines in live cattle futures: Most reported live cattle contracts finished lower, showing that wholesale beef strength has not yet translated into broad futures gains.
2. Uncertainty in cash negotiations: Quiet early-week trading leaves the next cash cattle price discovery uncertain.
3. Higher slaughter volumes: Cattle slaughter running above the same period last year may increase beef availability and pressure prices if demand does not keep pace.
4. Higher feedlot acquisition costs: Strong feeder cattle prices can squeeze feedlot margins if finished-cattle prices fail to rise sufficiently.
5. Potential resistance to elevated beef prices: If higher wholesale values weaken consumer demand, packers may become more cautious in bidding for cattle.

Live Cattle and Feeder Cattle Technical Analysis and Price Forecast

The latest settlement figures show a clear short-term divergence: live cattle futures weakened across most maturities, while feeder cattle futures advanced. This divergence makes it important to evaluate each market separately rather than assume that strength in feeder cattle will automatically lift live cattle.

The supplied update does not include intraday charts, moving averages, momentum readings or confirmed technical support and resistance levels. The following price references are therefore based on reported settlements, not independently verified chart signals.

Live cattle: price levels and scenarios

Key reference points:

• $230.00: The reported October live cattle settlement provides a nearby reference for monitoring whether the contract can hold its recent level.
• $230.85: The December contract’s reported settlement provides a reference for evaluating follow-through in that contract.
• $233.575: The February 2027 settlement is a separate contract reference and should not be treated as immediate resistance for the October or December contracts.

Bullish scenario: Live cattle could stabilise if the next cash cattle trade holds near or above last week’s reported prices and boxed beef values remain firm. A recovery in futures accompanied by stronger cash trade would provide more convincing confirmation than a futures rebound alone.

Bearish scenario: Further weakness in cash cattle prices, declining boxed beef values or continued selling in live cattle futures could extend the current pullback. Traders should monitor whether the market breaks below recent chart-defined swing lows.

Feeder cattle: price levels and scenarios

Key reference points:

• $352.800: The reported October feeder cattle settlement provides the nearest supplied reference for the front contract.
• $350.67: The CME Feeder Cattle Index offers a cash-market benchmark, although it is not interchangeable with a futures settlement.
• $350.025: The November feeder cattle settlement provides a separate contract reference.

Bullish scenario: Continued strength in auction prices and the feeder cattle index could support feeder futures, especially if demand for replacement animals remains firm.

Bearish scenario: A reversal in auction prices, weakening live cattle futures or pressure on feedlot margins could reduce buyers’ willingness to pay elevated prices for feeder cattle.

Indicators to monitor

Traders should watch recent swing highs and lows, moving-average direction, RSI and MACD momentum, and whether price moves receive confirmation from trading volume. For live cattle, the next cash trade and boxed beef reports are particularly important fundamental checks. For feeder cattle, auction results and the CME Feeder Cattle Index provide useful confirmation of physical-market strength.

Market Outlook for the Coming Sessions

The cattle complex enters the next sessions with competing signals. Wholesale beef prices and feeder cattle values are strengthening, while most live cattle futures contracts have slipped. The direction of cash cattle negotiations will be central to determining whether the two markets move back into alignment.

The main scenarios to watch are:

• Live cattle stabilise: Cash prices remain near last week’s levels, wholesale beef stays firm and futures recover from recent weakness.
• Feeder cattle remain supported: Auction prices and the feeder cattle index continue to rise, sustaining demand for replacement animals.
• Live cattle face further pressure: Cash trade weakens or slaughter and beef availability increase without sufficient demand to support wholesale values.
• Feedlot margins tighten: Feeder acquisition costs remain elevated while finished-cattle prices fail to keep pace.

The most useful near-term confirmation will come from the relationship between negotiated cash cattle prices, wholesale beef values and futures settlements. Firm beef prices alone may not be sufficient to sustain a rally if feedlot bids and finished-cattle demand weaken.

Currency Hedger View

Cattle producers, feedlots, processors and meat traders can face margin uncertainty from changing livestock prices, feed costs, transport expenses and payment timing. Businesses trading internationally may also face foreign-exchange exposure when buying feed, importing equipment or settling meat and livestock transactions in currencies different from their operating currency.

Currency Hedger encourages businesses to assess their actual commercial exposures, expected cash flows and contractual commitments before considering a risk-management strategy. Commodity-price risk and currency risk are separate exposures, but both can affect the profitability of the same transaction.
