Cocoa prices are recovering as declining arrivals from Ivory Coast, deteriorating crop prospects across West Africa and the risk of stronger El Niño conditions provide support to the market. However, rising ICE-certified inventories and uneven demand across major consuming regions continue to limit the upside.

December ICE New York cocoa futures (CCZ26) gained 1.58% to close at a higher level, while December ICE London cocoa #7 futures (CAZ26) advanced 2.16%. The recovery followed the previous session’s sell-off, which was partly associated with weakness in the Brazilian real following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s election victory.

The market is balancing immediate currency-driven selling pressure against growing concerns over the size and quality of the 2026/27 cocoa crop. With the main harvest underway in Ivory Coast, shipment data and early crop assessments are becoming increasingly important indicators of the global supply outlook.

Market Snapshot

Figures reflect the supplied market report and the latest reporting periods cited within it. The futures price changes are percentage moves; absolute settlement prices were not provided.

Current Cocoa Price Action

Cocoa futures are attempting to recover after a sell-off driven partly by currency movements in Brazil. A weaker Brazilian real can encourage exporters to sell cocoa more aggressively because dollar-denominated sales translate into more local currency. Although Brazil accounts for only around 4–5% of global cocoa production, currency movements can still influence short-term sentiment and selling behaviour.

The recovery in both New York and London futures indicates that supply concerns remain influential. The stronger gain in London cocoa suggests a firmer rebound in that contract during the reported session, although the percentage difference alone does not establish a sustained change in market direction.

The immediate focus is shifting towards West African crop arrivals, where the latest figures point to a substantial reduction in cocoa reaching Ivory Coast ports. If these lower arrivals persist, concerns about available supplies could strengthen the market’s underlying price support.

Ivory Coast Shipments Signal Tighter Supply

Ivory Coast remains central to the global cocoa market, making its port-arrival figures a major indicator of near-term supply availability.

Government data showed that farmers delivered 44,241 metric tonnes of cocoa to ports during the week ended October 25, compared with 82,010 MT during the equivalent period a year earlier. This represents a sharp year-on-year decline in weekly arrivals.

For the period from October 1 to October 25, cumulative arrivals reached 122,453 MT, down 43% from 215,219 MT during the comparable period a year earlier.

These figures raise questions about the pace of deliveries at the beginning of the current crop cycle. However, lower arrivals do not automatically translate into an equivalent reduction in total production, as the timing of harvesting, deliveries and the marketing calendar can influence the data.

The comparison also requires care because Ivory Coast moved the start of its 2026/27 marketing year forward by one month, to September 1. Different reporting conventions can therefore affect year-on-year comparisons.

Nevertheless, if arrivals remain significantly below last year’s levels as the harvest progresses, the market may become increasingly sensitive to evidence of tighter physical supply.

West African Crop Conditions and El Niño Risks

Medium-term cocoa fundamentals are receiving support from concerns about crop development in Ivory Coast and Ghana. Both countries are important suppliers, and any sustained deterioration in their harvests can have a disproportionate effect on global availability.

Early surveys of the Ivory Coast 2026/27 crop indicate below-average cherelle formation, referring to the early development of cocoa pods. Poor pod development can point towards weaker future harvest volumes.

One estimate places Ivory Coast production at approximately 1.8 million metric tonnes for the season beginning in September, down around 18% from roughly 2.2 MMT in 2025/26.

Crop-quality concerns are also increasing. Cloudy conditions and limited sunshine in Ivory Coast and Ghana have reportedly contributed to the spread of black pod disease, which can damage pods and reduce the quality of harvested beans.

Weather remains an important risk for the months ahead. The US Climate Prediction Center has warned that the El Niño pattern developing across the equatorial Pacific could become one of the strongest in more than 75 years. El Niño can bring warmer and drier conditions to parts of West Africa, potentially reducing soil moisture and placing additional stress on cocoa trees.

The precise impact will depend on the timing, intensity and regional distribution of the weather pattern. Nevertheless, the prospect of adverse conditions is providing a potential source of medium-term support for cocoa prices.

Ghana Production Outlook Raises Further Concerns

Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, is also facing uncertainty over its next crop.

An August field assessment by Ghana’s Cocoa Board estimated 2026/27 production at 650,000 MT, down 13% from the 750,000 MT estimate for 2025/26.

A separate projection from Ghana’s cocoa regulator, COCOBOD, placed the potential 2026/27 harvest lower, at between 450,000 MT and 550,000 MT. The regulator cited the combined effects of swollen shoot disease, ageing cocoa farms and the risk of adverse El Niño-related weather.

The difference between the two assessments highlights the uncertainty surrounding Ghana’s production outlook. They should be treated as separate estimates rather than as a single confirmed forecast.

For the current 2025/26 season, Ghana reported 750,000 MT harvested as of August 26, representing an increase of 25.6% from 597,000 MT in 2024/25. That stronger production performance provides some context for the transition into the next crop year, but it does not remove the risks facing the 2026/27 harvest.

If Ghana’s output falls sharply while Ivory Coast arrivals remain weak, the combined impact could tighten the supply outlook and increase the market’s sensitivity to any further negative crop reports.

ICE Cocoa Inventories Limit the Recovery

Rising exchange-monitored inventories remain an important bearish counterweight to the supply concerns in West Africa.

ICE cocoa inventories climbed to 3,684,698 bags on Monday, reaching their highest level in approximately two and a half years. They subsequently edged lower to 3,679,744 bags on Tuesday.

The small decline does little to reverse the broader inventory increase recorded since the beginning of the year. Higher certified stocks can ease concerns about immediately available exchange-deliverable supplies and limit the urgency of buying futures.

The market is therefore facing two competing signals: lower reported arrivals from Ivory Coast suggest that physical supply may be tightening, while elevated ICE inventories indicate that exchange stocks remain comparatively abundant.

A sustained decline in inventories alongside weaker West African arrivals would strengthen the bullish case. Conversely, continued stock accumulation could restrict price gains even if crop forecasts deteriorate.

Cocoa Demand Remains Mixed Across Major Regions

Recent grinding data show that cocoa demand is not moving uniformly across the world’s main processing regions.

North America: Grinding Activity Weakens

The National Confectioners Association reported that North American cocoa grindings fell 2.5% year-on-year in the third quarter to 109,978 MT. The decline was unexpected, as the market had anticipated little change.

The weaker figure raises concerns about processing demand and the ability of manufacturers to absorb cocoa at elevated prices. If the decline persists, it could undermine the demand side of the market.

Asia: Strong Growth in Processing

The Cocoa Association of Asia reported that third-quarter grindings rose 29% year-on-year to a record 233,767 MT. This was significantly stronger than the expected increase of 15%.

The result provides a positive demand signal, suggesting that Asian processing activity remains robust despite the volatility in cocoa prices.

Europe: Grindings Exceed Expectations

European cocoa grindings increased 3.2% year-on-year, according to the European Cocoa Association. This contrasted with expectations for a 3.9% decline.

The stronger-than-expected figure offers further evidence that demand conditions are more resilient in some regions than in North America.

Taken together, the figures point to a mixed global demand environment. Asian and European processing provide support, but weaker North American grindings caution against assuming that consumption is strengthening everywhere.

Bullish Sentiment

1. Sharp decline in Ivory Coast arrivals: Cumulative port arrivals were down 43% year-on-year for October 1–25, raising concerns about the pace of supply reaching the market.
2. Lower Ivory Coast crop expectations: Early assessments suggest production could fall to approximately 1.8 MMT in 2026/27, around 18% below the previous season’s estimated output.
3. Risk of weaker Ghanaian production: Estimates for Ghana’s next crop point to a potential decline, with COCOBOD’s lower projection highlighting the risk from disease, ageing trees and adverse weather.
4. Potential El Niño disruption: Warmer and drier conditions in West Africa could affect soil moisture, pod development and yields, depending on the pattern’s strength and timing.
5. Stronger Asian and European grindings: Both regions reported better-than-expected third-quarter processing activity, providing evidence of continuing demand in major consuming markets.
6. Black pod disease and poor pod development: Crop-quality concerns could further constrain marketable supply if they persist through the main harvest.

Bearish Sentiment

1. Elevated ICE inventories: Stocks remain near a two-and-a-half-year high, reducing the immediate scarcity signal from exchange-monitored supplies.
2. Weak North American grindings: A 2.5% year-on-year decline points to softer processing activity in an important consuming market.
3. Brazilian real weakness: A weaker currency can encourage Brazilian exporters to sell more aggressively, adding to short-term selling pressure.
4. Recent recovery follows a sell-off: The rebound in futures does not, by itself, confirm a lasting bullish trend or a reversal of the previous losses.
5. Strong Ghana production in 2025/26: Harvested output of 750,000 MT was 25.6% higher than in 2024/25, demonstrating that recent production gains can provide a buffer before the next crop transition.
6. Uncertainty in crop forecasts: Early field assessments and differing production estimates may change as more reliable harvest data become available.

Cocoa Technical Analysis and Price Forecast

The reported gains in New York and London cocoa futures indicate a short-term recovery, but the available figures do not establish that a sustained bullish trend has developed. Absolute settlement prices, chart-based support and resistance levels, and technical indicators were not included in the supplied report, so specific price targets cannot be reliably established from these data alone.

Bullish Scenario

Cocoa prices could extend their recovery if Ivory Coast arrivals remain weak, crop estimates are revised lower and weather concerns intensify. Further confirmation could come from falling ICE inventories and continued strength in Asian and European grindings.

Under this scenario, traders may become more willing to price in a tighter 2026/27 supply balance, particularly if evidence of poor pod development translates into lower production.

Bearish Scenario

Prices could come under renewed pressure if exchange inventories continue rising, North American processing demand weakens further or Brazilian exporters increase sales in response to currency movements.

A recovery that fails to attract sustained buying would leave cocoa vulnerable to renewed selling, particularly if crop concerns are offset by evidence of adequate available stocks.

Key Levels and Indicators to Watch

• December New York cocoa: Monitor whether the recent recovery attracts follow-through buying or fades.
• December London cocoa: Assess whether the stronger percentage rebound is sustained in subsequent sessions.
• Ivory Coast port arrivals: Watch for evidence that the year-on-year shortfall is narrowing or widening.
• ICE-certified inventories: A sustained decline would support a tighter-supply narrative; continued accumulation could cap gains.
• West African crop assessments: Revisions to Ivory Coast and Ghana production estimates could influence the medium-term direction.
• Regional grindings: Further demand data will help determine whether processing activity can offset supply uncertainty.

Market Outlook for the Coming Sessions

Cocoa prices remain caught between near-term inventory and currency pressures and a potentially more supportive medium-term supply outlook.

The immediate direction is likely to depend on whether the recovery in futures is supported by continued evidence of lower West African deliveries. Ivory Coast’s 43% year-on-year decline in cumulative arrivals is a significant development, but traders will need to see whether the shortfall persists as the harvest progresses.

ICE inventories remain a key counterweight. If stocks stay elevated or continue increasing, the market may struggle to sustain gains despite concerns about the next crop. Demand will also remain important: strong Asian and European grindings are constructive, while weaker North American activity suggests that high cocoa prices may be affecting some processing markets.

Looking further ahead, El Niño risks, disease pressure and early indications of weaker pod development could provide additional support if they translate into lower harvest volumes. However, the eventual effect on production remains uncertain, and forecasts may change as the season develops.

The overall outlook is cautiously supportive over the medium term, but vulnerable to short-term volatility. The most important confirmation will be whether deteriorating West African supply indicators are accompanied by falling inventories and sustained buying across both futures markets.

Currency Hedger View

Cocoa’s current market structure reflects a contest between tightening crop prospects and the availability of existing stocks. The decline in Ivory Coast arrivals and concerns about the 2026/27 harvest are important bullish signals, while high ICE inventories and uneven regional demand continue to limit confidence in a sustained rally.

For chocolate manufacturers, cocoa processors, importers and other businesses exposed to cocoa costs, the key commercial risk is the possibility of further price volatility as the market responds to harvest data and weather developments. Businesses purchasing cocoa in US dollars may also face foreign-exchange exposure if their revenues or operating costs are denominated in another currency.

A structured review of commodity and currency exposure can help businesses understand how price changes affect procurement budgets, payment obligations and expected margins. Currency Hedger provides information on managing these risks and assessing potential hedging approaches.
