Vietnam Industrial Production Accelerates to 15%

Vietnam’s industrial production increased by 15.0% year-on-year in October 2026, accelerating from 14.2% in September and marking its strongest expansion since January.

The improvement was driven primarily by stronger activity in manufacturing and electricity production.

Processing and manufacturing output increased by 15.7%, compared with 15.1% in September. Electricity production and distribution also accelerated significantly, rising 15.7% against 10.4% in the previous month.

Within manufacturing, metal production recorded particularly strong growth, accelerating to 27.3% from 20.9%. Electrical equipment manufacturing also strengthened, with output growth increasing to 10.1% from 4.7%.

However, not all industrial sectors recorded improvements. Electronic products manufacturing growth moderated to 18.6% from 19.8%, while output growth in other transport vehicles slowed sharply to 14.2% from 28.8%.

Mining industry growth also eased to 4.9% from 6.6%, while water supply, waste management and wastewater treatment slowed to 7.8% from 10.9%.

On a monthly basis, industrial production increased by 2.3%. Across the first ten months of 2026, industrial production expanded by 12.4% compared with the same period last year.

The latest figures suggest that Vietnam’s manufacturing base continues to expand rapidly, although growth is uneven across individual industrial segments.

Foreign Direct Investment Continues to Strengthen

Travel services recorded stronger growth of 21.8%, compared with 19.2% previously, while other services increased by 15.7%, up from 14.5%.

Accommodation and food services revenue remained strong but eased slightly, rising 19.5% compared with 19.7% in September.

On a monthly basis, total retail sales and consumer service revenue increased by 1.0%.

For January–October, total retail sales of goods and consumer services reached VND6,618.9 trillion, representing growth of 13.5% compared with the same period in 2025.

The acceleration in retail activity suggests that domestic demand remains an important contributor to Vietnam’s economic expansion alongside manufacturing and international trade.

Vietnam Records Largest-Ever Monthly Trade Surplus

Vietnam recorded a trade surplus of $7.31 billion in October 2026, compared with $2.38 billion in the same month last year.

This was the second consecutive monthly trade surplus and the largest on record.

Exports increased by 51.4% year-on-year to a record $64.67 billion, while imports surged by 43.1% to $57.36 billion.

The strong performance in both trade flows reflects continued activity across Vietnam’s manufacturing and export industries, alongside substantial demand for imported machinery and production materials.

During the first ten months of 2026, Vietnam recorded a trade deficit of $12.07 billion.

Exports increased by 27.5% to $499.24 billion, while imports grew by a faster 37.4% to $511.31 billion.

Total exports and imports turnover reached $1.010 trillion, increasing by 32.3% compared with the same period last year and surpassing the $1 trillion threshold for the first time.

The United States remained Vietnam’s largest export market, while China continued to be its largest source of imports.

Vietnam Inflation Reaches Five-Month High

Vietnam’s annual inflation rate edged higher to 5.09% in October from 5.08% in September, marking its highest reading since May 2026.

The overall increase was marginal, but several important components recorded stronger price growth.

Transport inflation accelerated sharply to 15.57% from 11.67%, while housing and utilities inflation increased to 6.50% from 6.47%.
