The market is being pulled in two directions. Limited immediately available certified arabica stocks and potential El Niño-related crop risks are supporting prices, while improving production prospects in Brazil and Vietnam, higher export volumes and expectations of a global surplus remain significant bearish influences.

Current Coffee Price Action
Arabica and robusta futures are showing renewed strength after recent selling pressure. The recovery reflects concerns about immediately available coffee supplies, particularly in the certified arabica market.
ICE arabica inventories declined to 220,917 bags, a one-and-a-half-month low. This level remains only modestly above the 27-year low of 217,646 bags recorded on September 15, highlighting how limited certified stocks remain.
Brazilian coffee has been arriving at ICE warehouses, but much of this supply has not yet entered certified inventory figures. A substantial quantity is still awaiting grading, meaning the official stock position could change as additional coffee passes inspection.
Robusta inventories present a different picture. ICE robusta stocks have increased considerably since early October, reaching a one-and-a-quarter-year high of 6,809 lots on Thursday before easing to 6,711 lots on Monday. The contrast between tightening arabica stocks and rising robusta inventories is an important factor behind the differing supply dynamics across the two markets.
Arabica Inventories and Brazilian Deliveries
The availability of certified arabica coffee remains one of the strongest near-term supportive factors.
ICE reported that 47,476 bags of Brazilian coffee were awaiting grading as of last Friday, the highest amount in six weeks. Coffee that passes grading requirements can be added to certified warehouse inventories, although the process may take one to two weeks or longer when volumes are elevated.
Brazilian coffee arrivals have accelerated since mid-September, with ICE inventories of Brazilian coffee reaching a nine-month high of 83,052 bags last Thursday and Friday.
This creates an important distinction between coffee physically arriving at warehouses and coffee becoming available within the certified inventory system. Until grading is completed, the increase in physical arrivals may not translate immediately into higher reported certified stocks.
If a significant proportion of the coffee awaiting grading enters the ICE system, the current inventory tightness could ease. However, delays or lower-than-expected grading volumes may continue to support nearby arabica futures.
Brazil Crop Conditions and Weather Outlook
Weather conditions in Brazil remain central to the outlook for arabica production.
Somar Meteorologia reported that Minas Gerais, Brazil’s main arabica-growing region, received 29.6 mm of rainfall in the week ended October 25. This represented 82% of the historical average.
Although rainfall was below the normal level for the period, broader growing conditions have been considered favourable. Above-normal rainfall during the critical flowering stage could improve the development of the 2026/27 harvest and increase the availability of arabica coffee next season.
Brazil’s crop outlook has already been revised higher. On September 24, Conab increased its 2026 coffee production estimate to 67.6 million bags from 66.7 million bags.
The forecast includes:
- Arabica production rising 34.8% year-on-year to 48.21 million bags.
- Robusta production declining 6.6% year-on-year to 19.39 million bags.
The expected recovery in arabica output is a significant bearish consideration for prices, particularly if favourable weather continues through the crop development cycle.
However, the potential influence of a strong El Niño remains an important uncertainty. Adverse weather associated with the developing pattern could disrupt production prospects in Brazil and Vietnam, potentially changing the supply outlook.
Vietnam Production and Export Outlook
Vietnam remains a major influence on the robusta market as the world’s largest robusta producer.
Recent rainfall has improved soil moisture conditions in the Central Highlands, Vietnam’s principal coffee-growing region. Forecaster Vaisala indicated that the additional moisture should support coffee cherry development.
This is currently a bearish factor for robusta prices because improved growing conditions may contribute to stronger production in the coming season.
Vietnam’s export figures also point towards substantial available supply. The National Statistics Office reported that September coffee exports increased 53% year-on-year to 124,000 MT.
Exports during January to September 2026 rose 16.2% year-on-year to 1.45 million MT. Full-year 2025 exports increased 17.5% to 1.58 million MT.
Vietnam’s 2025/26 coffee production is projected to increase 6% year-on-year to a four-year high of 1.76 million MT, equivalent to approximately 29.4 million bags.
Nevertheless, the weather outlook is not entirely reassuring. Vietnam’s Agriculture Ministry warned that the Central Highlands could face an El Niño-related drought later this year and into early 2027. If rainfall becomes insufficient during critical growing stages, production could be affected.
Global Coffee Supply and Consumption
The broader global supply outlook remains a major source of downward pressure.
The International Coffee Organization projected that global coffee production in 2025/26 would increase 4.4% year-on-year to a record 183.6 million bags.
Consumption was forecast to decline 0.9% to 180.6 million bags, leaving the market with an estimated surplus of 3 million bags. This would represent the first global surplus in five years.
The USDA’s biannual forecast also points towards expanding global production.
For the 2026/27 season, the USDA expects global coffee output to increase 6%, or 10.8 million bags, to a record 189.7 million bags.
Its projections include:
- Global arabica production increasing 12% year-on-year.
- Robusta production declining 0.7% year-on-year.
- World ending stocks rising by 1.9 million bags to 26.3 million bags.
The USDA also forecast a record Brazilian coffee crop of 71.9 million bags for 2026/27, representing a 14% annual increase.
These forecasts suggest that the global market could move towards a more comfortable supply position, although actual production will remain dependent on weather conditions and the eventual size of the harvests.
Colombia Production and Export Developments
Colombia’s coffee industry is facing a more challenging production environment.
The Colombian Coffee Federation reported that 2025/26 production fell 15% year-on-year to 12.65 million bags. Exports declined 12% to 11.78 million bags.
Colombia is the world’s second-largest arabica producer, making its production performance relevant to the availability of higher-quality arabica supplies.
Lower Colombian output provides some support to arabica prices, although the expected recovery in Brazilian production could offset part of the supply reduction.
