Platinum futures have fallen below $1,560 per ounce, reaching their lowest level since November 2025, as a liquidity-driven sell-off across precious metals coincides with a broader equity market rout. Growing concerns about the sustainability of artificial intelligence investment are weighing on investor confidence, while forced liquidations and rising inflation risks are adding further pressure to platinum prices.

The outlook is being challenged by both financial market conditions and weakening fundamentals. Investors are selling liquid assets, including precious metals, to meet margin calls and cover losses elsewhere, while rising oil prices amid the escalating Middle East conflict are reinforcing expectations that interest rates could remain elevated for longer. At the same time, forecasts of a platinum market surplus in 2026, weaker jewellery consumption and declining automotive demand are creating additional headwinds.

Platinum Market Snapshot

Current Platinum Price Action: Selling Pressure Intensifies

Platinum has fallen sharply as investors respond to deteriorating sentiment across financial markets. The sell-off is not being driven solely by platinum-specific factors. Instead, wider market stress is prompting investors to liquidate liquid assets to raise cash, meet margin requirements and offset losses in other investments.

Concerns about the sustainability of AI-related investment have contributed to a sharp decline in US equities. At the same time, investors have moved towards US Treasuries, pushing bond prices higher and yields lower. Despite this demand for government bonds, precious metals have come under pressure as investors prioritise liquidity over traditional safe-haven holdings.

Platinum’s decline below $1,560 an ounce signals that selling pressure remains substantial. Whether the market can stabilise will depend on the intensity of forced liquidations, the direction of broader risk sentiment and the willingness of buyers to enter at lower prices.

Liquidity Pressures and the Broader Market Sell-Off

The current decline highlights the vulnerability of precious metals during periods of financial market stress. Although gold and platinum can benefit from uncertainty under certain conditions, both can face significant selling pressure when investors need to raise cash quickly.

Three developments are particularly important for platinum:

1. Equity market weakness: Concerns over the sustainability of AI investment have undermined confidence in US stocks, increasing pressure on investors to reduce exposure and cover losses.
2. Forced liquidations: Investors are selling liquid assets, including precious metals, to meet margin calls and manage losses elsewhere in their portfolios.
3. Changing portfolio priorities: The preference for liquidity during periods of market stress can temporarily outweigh longer-term investment arguments for holding precious metals.

If these pressures persist, platinum could remain vulnerable even if the broader economic outlook continues to support demand for selected industrial commodities.

Inflation and Interest Rates Add to Platinum’s Challenges

Rising oil prices amid the escalating Middle East conflict are creating another obstacle for platinum. Higher energy prices can intensify inflation concerns, potentially delaying interest-rate reductions or reinforcing expectations that borrowing costs will remain elevated.

This matters because platinum does not generate interest income. When investors expect interest rates to remain high, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets can increase, reducing their relative appeal.

The combination of inflation uncertainty, elevated interest-rate expectations and financial market deleveraging is therefore creating a difficult environment for platinum. A sustained recovery may require easing liquidity pressures alongside a more supportive outlook for monetary policy.

Platinum Supply and the 2026 Market Surplus

Fundamental supply-and-demand conditions are also weighing on the market. The World Platinum Investment Council forecasts a 265,000-ounce platinum surplus in 2026, indicating that projected supply is expected to exceed demand.

A surplus can place downward pressure on prices if available metal accumulates faster than the market can absorb it. The effect will depend on the scale of actual supply, changes in industrial consumption and whether investment demand recovers.

The current weakness in investment demand is particularly important because platinum is facing financial market selling at the same time that its projected market balance points towards excess supply.

For prices to recover sustainably, the market may need evidence that the anticipated surplus is narrowing or that demand is strengthening more quickly than expected.

Automotive Demand Faces Further Pressure

Automotive demand is expected to decline by 4% in 2026, creating a headwind for platinum consumption.

The automotive sector is an important source of platinum demand, particularly through its use in vehicle emissions-control systems. A projected decline in this segment could limit the market’s ability to absorb available supply, especially if investment demand remains subdued.

However, the forecast does not mean that automotive consumption will necessarily weaken by exactly 4%. Actual demand will depend on vehicle production, technology choices, regional market conditions and changes in platinum use within automotive applications.

For traders, the key question is whether weakness in automotive demand will be offset by stronger consumption elsewhere.

Industrial Demand Offers a Partial Counterbalance

Industrial demand is projected to increase by 5% in 2026, offering a potentially supportive factor for platinum.

This expected expansion could help absorb some of the metal that would otherwise contribute to the forecast surplus. Nevertheless, stronger industrial consumption may not be sufficient to offset weaker jewellery demand, declining automotive demand and subdued investment interest.

The relationship between industrial demand and overall market supply will therefore remain central to the outlook. If industrial consumption outperforms expectations, the projected surplus could narrow. If growth falls short, the existing bearish supply-demand picture could become more pronounced.

Jewellery Consumption and Investment Demand

Softer jewellery consumption is adding to platinum’s fundamental challenges, while weaker investment demand is reducing another potential source of support.

Investment flows can be particularly influential during periods of financial market volatility. When investors are liquidating assets to raise cash, platinum can experience additional selling pressure regardless of its longer-term industrial applications.

Jewellery demand also matters because weaker consumer interest can reduce the market’s capacity to absorb supply. Combined with the projected decline in automotive demand, this creates a more challenging demand outlook unless industrial consumption or investment interest improves.

Bullish Sentiment: Factors That Could Support Platinum

1. Potential stabilisation in financial markets: A reduction in forced liquidations could ease immediate selling pressure and allow platinum to respond more directly to its underlying fundamentals.
2. Lower oil prices and easing inflation concerns: A moderation in energy prices could reduce fears of persistently elevated interest rates, potentially improving the relative appeal of non-yielding precious metals.
3. Stronger industrial consumption: Industrial demand is forecast to rise by 5% in 2026, providing a potential source of additional consumption.
4. Improving investment demand: A return of investor interest could help absorb available supply and support a recovery in prices.
5. A smaller-than-expected market surplus: If actual demand exceeds expectations or available supply is lower than projected, the anticipated 265,000-ounce surplus could narrow.

Bearish Sentiment: Factors That Could Drive Further Losses

1. Continued forced selling: Further margin calls or portfolio liquidations could keep platinum under pressure as investors prioritise cash.
2. Persistent equity market weakness: Renewed concerns over AI investment and broader stock market valuations could intensify financial market volatility.
3. Elevated interest-rate expectations: Persistent inflation concerns could reduce demand for non-yielding precious metals.
4. The forecast 2026 surplus: An expected surplus of 265,000 ounces creates a fundamental headwind if supply continues to exceed consumption.
5. Declining automotive demand: The projected 4% fall in automotive demand could weaken one of platinum’s important consumption channels.
6. Softer jewellery consumption: Continued weakness in jewellery demand could make it more difficult for the market to absorb available metal.

Platinum Price Forecast: What Traders Are Watching

Platinum’s immediate outlook remains bearish while prices stay under pressure from forced liquidations, elevated interest-rate expectations and concerns about a potential market surplus. A move below $1,560 an ounce places attention on whether selling accelerates or whether buyers begin to emerge following the decline to an 11-month low.

The next direction will depend on both financial market conditions and evidence of changes in the physical market balance.

Bearish scenario: If equity market stress intensifies, liquidity-driven selling continues and demand indicators remain weak, platinum could face further downside pressure. Persistent inflation concerns and the forecast market surplus would reinforce this risk.

Recovery scenario: If forced liquidations ease, financial markets stabilise and investment demand returns, platinum could attempt to recover. Stronger-than-expected industrial demand or evidence that the projected surplus is narrowing would provide additional support.

No specific technical support or resistance levels can be established from the available market information. Traders should therefore monitor actual price behaviour around the recent low rather than assume that a particular level will hold.

Platinum Supply Outlook

The forecast 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026 remains a central consideration for the supply outlook. If production and other sources of available metal exceed consumption, the resulting surplus could limit the scope for a sustained price recovery.

The outlook would become more supportive if supply were lower than expected or if stronger demand reduced the projected excess. Until such evidence emerges, the anticipated surplus remains a potential source of downward pressure.

Platinum Demand Outlook

Demand conditions are mixed. Automotive demand is expected to decline by 4%, while jewellery consumption and investment demand are facing pressure. Industrial demand, by contrast, is forecast to increase by 5%.

The extent to which industrial growth can offset weakness in other segments will be crucial. If investment and jewellery demand remain subdued while automotive consumption declines, the market could struggle to absorb supply. A stronger recovery in investment interest or better-than-expected industrial consumption would improve that balance.

Market Outlook for the Coming Sessions

Platinum enters the coming sessions under pressure from a combination of financial market stress, inflation uncertainty and a challenging fundamental outlook. The fall below $1,560 an ounce reflects a market in which liquidity needs are driving selling, while the projected 2026 surplus and weaker automotive and jewellery demand are limiting confidence in a recovery.

Traders should focus on three developments: whether forced liquidations begin to ease, how expectations for interest rates respond to oil prices and inflation risks, and whether incoming evidence supports the forecast supply surplus.

For now, the balance of risks remains tilted to the downside. A more durable recovery would likely require improving financial market conditions alongside clearer evidence that platinum’s demand outlook is strengthening or its projected surplus is narrowing.

Today Markets Analysis

Platinum’s decline illustrates how precious metals can come under pressure during a liquidity-driven sell-off, even when wider economic uncertainty might ordinarily support defensive assets. In the near term, market positioning and the need to raise cash are competing with longer-term supply-and-demand fundamentals.

The forecast 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026, expected weakness in automotive demand and softer jewellery consumption create additional challenges. Industrial demand growth offers a partial offset, but its ability to rebalance the market remains uncertain.

The key signal for traders will be whether the current decline begins to stabilise as liquidation pressures ease, or whether financial market volatility and platinum’s projected surplus continue to reinforce the bearish trend.
